Southern Pool Designs designs and builds custom pools in Ocala and across Marion County, from golf communities to equestrian estates in northwest Marion’s horse country, where we already build. Our team handles design, engineering coordination, City of Ocala or Marion County permitting, and construction. Ocala projects typically land in our Signature ($175,000 to $325,000) and Monument ($325,000 to $1,000,000+) tiers. Every project starts in our custom pool design studio, where you see the full design in 3D and know the cost before we break ground.

Ocala Pool Builder for Equestrian Estates and Custom Homes

Building High-End Pools in Florida Since 1997

City of Ocala or Marion County: Who Permits Your Pool

Inside city limits, pools are permitted by City of Ocala Building Services, part of Growth Management, through the city’s online permitting portal. Most horse farms and estates, including the farm country northwest of the city, are in unincorporated Marion County, where Marion County Building Safety issues the permit through its Civic Access portal.

The county’s in-ground pool checklist asks for site plans showing the pool, deck, setbacks to the property lines, and a drainage and runoff plan, along with signed and sealed pool plans with pump head (TDH) calculations and a pump curve. We confirm jurisdiction from the parcel record and prepare the full package either way.

Building on Karst: Limestone, Springs and Sinkholes

Marion County sits on limestone. The county credits its limestone-rich soil for the quality of the horses raised here, and the same geology feeds Silver Springs, one of the largest first-magnitude springs in the country. It also means sinkholes are part of the conversation. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office notes they can occur in all parts of the county.

  • Know the ground first. On sites where conditions call for it, we recommend geotechnical testing, such as soil borings, before structural design. The engineer then designs the shell, footings, and decks to what the testing finds.
  • Plan the water. The county asks for a drainage and runoff plan with the permit. We grade so storm water goes to on-site retention, not into low spots near the pool or the house.
  • Protect the springs. Parts of Marion County fall within priority focus areas for Silver Springs and Rainbow Springs under Florida’s springs protection law. We keep construction runoff, pool water, and chemicals controlled on site throughout the build.

Horse Country and Estate Lots

Marion County calls itself the Horse Capital of the World, and the World Equestrian Center, roughly 400 acres in northwest Ocala, is the largest equestrian complex in the United States. Pools on farm and estate properties have their own planning needs:

  • Siting on acreage. We place the pool for views of the pasture, barn, or tree line, and keep it clear of the well, septic system, and drainfield.
  • Logistics. Long drives, gates, and farm traffic shape how concrete trucks, steel, and the shotcrete rig reach the site. We coordinate delivery windows so construction does not disrupt horses or daily operations.
  • Protecting the property. Haul routes and staging are planned to protect pasture, fencing, and irrigation.

Now building: a $525K to $550K estate pool in Reddick, in northwest Marion horse country, with structural concrete underway in October 2026. For the rest of the county, see our Marion County pool builder page. We share the area and budget range only, never client names or addresses.

Golf and Gated Communities

We also build in Ocala’s golf and gated neighborhoods, such as Golden Ocala, the Country Club of Ocala, and El Dorado. These communities typically require architectural review, and we prepare renderings, site plans, and finish selections for that submittal and run it alongside the permit.

Design Ideas for Ocala Homes

  • Vanishing edges facing the pasture on properties with long views. See our infinity edge pools.
  • Covered loggias and outdoor kitchens beside the pool for entertaining after a day at the barn or on the course.
  • Raised spas and fire features for Ocala’s cooler winter evenings. See our pool and spa design.
  • Smart automation so heaters, lighting, and features run from your phone on a large property. See pool automation.

Selected Projects From Our Portfolio

What a Custom Pool in Ocala Costs

Our pricing follows three published tiers:

  • Foundation: $120,000 to $175,000
  • Signature: $175,000 to $325,000, our most-built tier
  • Monument: $325,000 to $1,000,000+

Most Ocala estate projects land in Signature or Monument. Geotechnical work on karst sites, long-distance logistics on large properties, vanishing edges, and full outdoor living programs move a project up the range. Replacing an existing pool adds $8,000 to $20,000 for demolition. See our pricing page for what each tier includes.

Our Process for Ocala Projects

  • Welcome call. We confirm city or county jurisdiction, the property layout, and your goals and timing.
  • On-site design consultation. We walk the property, study views, and look at grade, drainage, ground conditions, and access.
  • The Signature Experience. Custom 3D design, engineering coordination, permitting and any community submittal, construction with a dedicated project manager and real-time tracking, and a final walkthrough.

Ocala Pool FAQs

Who issues pool permits in Ocala?

Inside city limits, City of Ocala Building Services issues pool permits. Properties in unincorporated Marion County, which includes most horse farms and many estates, are permitted by Marion County Building Safety. We confirm jurisdiction from the parcel record and prepare the permit package either way.

Are sinkholes a concern for a pool in Marion County?

They can be. Marion County sits on limestone, and sinkholes can occur anywhere in the county. On sites where conditions call for it, we recommend geotechnical testing before structural design so the engineering is based on what is actually in the ground.

Can you build a pool on a horse farm?

Yes. We site the pool for views and privacy, keep it clear of the well and septic system, and plan deliveries and staging around horses, fencing, and pasture. Most farm properties are in unincorporated Marion County and are permitted by the county.

How much does a custom pool cost in Ocala?

Most Ocala estate projects land in our Signature tier ($175,000 to $325,000) or Monument tier ($325,000 to $1,000,000+). Our Foundation tier starts at $120,000. Site conditions, features, and outdoor living scope drive the final number, and we give you a firm price after the design phase.

Other Areas We Serve

Around Ocala we also build in Belleview, Dunnellon, Reddick, Citra, and Summerfield. Closer to Orlando, see our pages for Mount Dora, Montverde, Clermont, and Seminole County.
