A luxury backyard in Florida is not a pool with some pavers around it. It is a full outdoor home: a place to cook, swim, lounge in the shade, gather around a fire and look good doing it at 9 p.m. in August. The best ones are designed as one piece, around the house, the lot and the way the family actually lives.
This guide walks through what separates a luxury backyard from an expensive one, the layouts that work best on Florida lots, and how our Design Studio plans the whole property in 3D before anything is dug.

What makes a backyard feel luxurious
Budget alone does not do it. The backyards that feel truly high end share five traits:
- One design, not a collection of add-ons. The pool, kitchen, shade structures, lighting and landscape are drawn together, so sightlines, grades and materials line up.
- A clear focal point. A water wall, fire feature, spa or view that the eye goes to first from the main living space inside the house.
- Rooms, not a patio. Distinct zones for cooking, dining, lounging and swimming, each sized for how many people you host.
- Shade and comfort built in. In Florida, a backyard without real shade, airflow and bug control gets used two months a year.
- Night design. Lighting scenes for the pool, landscape, architecture and paths, so the yard is at its best after sunset when it is actually cool enough to enjoy.
Luxury backyard design ideas that work in Florida
1. A resort-style pool as the centerpiece
Most luxury backyards in Florida are built around the water. Large sun shelves, raised or integrated spas, swim-up seating and water features turn the pool into the main living area. See our guide to resort-style pools for private residences and the sun shelf and tanning ledge guide for layout details.

2. An outdoor kitchen that rivals the one inside
A true outdoor kitchen has prep space, storage, a grill and the right ventilation, all under a roof that keeps rain and sun off the cook. In Florida, material choice matters more than anywhere: stainless that resists corrosion, countertops that handle UV and heat, and cabinets that will not swell in the humidity. Read designing outdoor kitchens that rival the indoors for more.
3. Fire and water together
Fire bowls on the pool edge, a sunken fire pit beside the water, or a fire feature set into a water wall create the drama people remember. Florida’s rain makes drainage the hidden detail that matters most, which we cover in sunken fire pit design and drainage.

4. A covered outdoor living room
A covered lanai, pavilion or pergola with ceiling fans, heaters for winter evenings and a TV wall becomes the most-used room of the house. Structures in Florida need to be engineered for wind loads, so this is a place where the design and the engineering have to be done together.
5. Wellness and recovery spaces
Saunas, cold plunges and recovery zones are now part of many high-end backyard plans. They pair naturally with a spa and a shaded lounge. See luxury wellness spaces.
6. Play and entertainment
Putting greens, lazy rivers, slides and grottos turn a backyard into a destination for kids, grandkids and guests. A few of our guides: backyard putting greens, backyard lazy rivers and pool grottos.

7. Lighting designed as scenes
Pool lights, landscape uplighting, step lights and architectural lighting should be designed as scenes you can switch between from your phone: entertaining, quiet evening, security. Our pool automation guide shows how this works.
Luxury backyard layouts by lot type
Lakefront and waterfront lots
The view is the design. Keep tall structures to the sides, consider a vanishing edge toward the water, and plan around setbacks and the water table, which on many Central Florida lakes sits close to the surface. See infinity edge pools.
Golf course and gated community lots
Communities like Golden Oak, Isleworth and Windermere, Bay Hill and Bella Collina have architectural review boards with their own rules on heights, materials, screening and lighting. Designing to those rules from day one avoids months of resubmittals.
Coastal lots
Salt air, wind and sand change the material list. Coastal backyards in areas like Ponte Vedra Beach and Merritt Island need corrosion-resistant hardware, the right stone and finishes, and plantings that tolerate salt. Read building a beach pool.
New construction
The best time to design the backyard is while the house is still on paper. Plumbing, electrical, gas, drainage and structural footings can be planned with the home builder instead of retrofitted. See how we work with home builders.

What a luxury backyard costs in Florida
Our custom pools start at $120,000, and full backyard projects with outdoor kitchens, shade structures, fire features and landscape go well beyond that. The single biggest factor is scope: how many rooms the backyard has to hold. For a detailed breakdown, see our 2026 pool pricing guide and how much to budget for outdoor living and a pool.
How we design a luxury backyard
Most luxury backyards are designed by one firm and priced by another, which is how budgets blow up. In our Design Studio, the same team designs, engineers and prices the whole property:
- Discovery. How you live, how many people you host, what you want to see from inside the house.
- 3D design. The full backyard modeled on your actual lot, so you can stand in it before it exists.
- Refinement. Materials, lighting, landscape and every feature tuned to your budget.
- Design book and fixed price. Every view, every material and every cost in one place, before we break ground.
- Engineering, permits and build. Built by the team that drew it.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to design and build a luxury backyard?
Design typically takes several weeks, depending on how many revisions you want. Construction time depends on scope, permitting and HOA review. We give you a schedule with your design book.
Do I need a landscape architect as well as a pool designer?
For whole-property estate designs, we work with a landscape architect partner so the planting, grading and hardscape are designed with the pool, not after it.
Can you design the backyard before my home is built?
Yes, and it is the best time to do it. We coordinate directly with your home builder and architect.
Do you work outside Central Florida?
Yes. We design and build across Florida from our offices in Sanford, Lake Nona, Merritt Island and St. Augustine. We do not serve South Florida.
